Broward County

Pompano Beach
Conditions:

An excellent and very popular wave sailing spot - good for winds with an easterly component from north to south, but beware the reef and rocks to the north when sailing southeast winds. The reef provides moderate protection from shorebreak and creates a zone of white water (the "washboard") 50 to 100 yards from the beach.

Launch:

The beach is very large and includes a small park with picnic and bathroom facilities. Rig on the grass in the park. Kitesurfing is popular here so mind not getting caught up in their lines.

Recommended Ability Level:

Because of moderate wave and shore break and due to the fact that water depth increases rapidly from shore, Pompano Beach mandates at least an Intermediate sailing ability level. You should be confident in deep-water starting and have had experience in launching and returning through whitewater and breaking waves.

Directions:

From I-95, take Atlantic Boulevard east to the beach. Turn left and take A1A north about 1.5 miles. Make a right into N.E. 16th Street. Metered parking is lightly to moderately enforced.
